Least Favorite Actresses

Least Favorite Actresses

I did not take personal life into account, this is simply based on their on screen appearances. I know many people's favorites are on this list, but these actresses just rub me the wrong way.

Jean Arthur

Tallulah Bankhead

Leslie Caron

Arlene Dahl

Betsy Drake

Jane Fonda

Greta Garbo

Audrey Hepburn

Katherine Hepburn

Jennifer Jones

Shirley MacLaine

Jayne Mansfield

Jean Simmons

Mamie Van Doran

Marie Wilson

I never understood how or why Mary Astor was cast as "a beautiful woman...."

I'm a huge classic film fan but cannot understand how Mary Astor was always cast as "the beauty." I think she always looked like an old maid...

LOL hilarious. I've never been able to stand Kate or Audrey Hepburn either. Just makes the hair on my arms stand up. Glad I wasn't the first one to say it! There must be some kind of punishment for this right?

OMG this is the funniest...Thank you for saying what we are all thinking!!!

This was so entertaining! Thanks for saying what we're all thinking...some of these actresses make me cringe but if I say anything people act like I insulted the pope! :-)

Tallulah Bankhead? Is that a joke or are you serious? I loved her in "The Cheat"!

I don't totally agree with ALL your choices, but I do very much understand them...

For years I secretly disliked Audrey Hepburn because most fans treated/admired her like a saint. Glad I can come "out of the closet" finally!

I'm glad you did too! I had the same feelings before I made this list. But I felt that I had to be honest and give my point of view. I'm sure she was a great person, but I can't stand her acting. It's a minority opinion, but I feel it says a lot about what I'm looking for in classic films and vintage life. The cutesy impish portrayals that folks love drives me nuts! And Julie Andrews clearly should have been Eliza Doolittle.

Shelley Winters she was so common and loud How she ever got the part in the film A Place In the Sun mystifies me. Never cared for Nancy Davis or Betty Hutton either.Just me I guess

I love Audrey Hepburn and feel that Serena and Breakfast At Tiffany's surely should get good notices but in particular I love her in Charade. Some of your choices I agree with but not this one or Leslie Caron who played in Gigi...

I know what you mean! In "The Maltese Falcon" she is supposed to be this young, gorgeous woman. Beulah Bondi would have been just as believable in that role!

I know it is unthinkable for some people to hear this, but, Audrey Hepburn was HORRIBLY miscast in "Breakfast at Tiffany's". She ruined the movie for me.

@Donald McCall... I think Shelly's "frumpiness" was the whole point of her role as the jilted girl.

Watching Betsy Drake in a movie is like having someone scrape a chalkboard with their fingernails while I watch paint dry.
Mamie Van Doren was an absolute HOOT in "Girls Town"... 40 year old woman playing a 16 year old!!!???!!!
MST3K did a wonderful send up of that movie... it is on You Tube.

I agree with most of your list except for Jayne Mansfield and Mamie Van Doren. They are my favorite actresses (along with Diana Dors).

I do enjoy their personas and spirits, but if I'm thinking of what would be a good film to watch, nothing with Mansfield or Van Doren comes to mind. They are good B Actresses, but when I think of classic Hollywood, they are not my favorites.

But for Jean Arthur - wonderful in "You Can't Take It With You" - I agree with you about all the others. Never "got" why Garbo and the two Hepburns were ever considered so great?!!!
